Jude Law is in negotiations to play the male lead opposite Brie Larson in Marvel’s “Captain Marvel,” sources tell Variety.

Ben Mendelsohn is on board to play the villain with “Half Nelson” helmers Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck directing. Kevin Feige is producing.

Marvel had no comment.

Geneva Robertson-Dworet wrote the most recent script with “Inside Out” scribe Meg LeFauve and Nicole Perlman penning previous drafts, which follows Carol Danvers, an Air Force pilot whose DNA is fused with that of an alien during an accident. The resulting alteration imbues her with the superpowers of strength, energy projection, and flight.

Law will be playing Doctor Walter Lawson, a.k.a. Mar-Vell, who becomes a mentor of sorts to Danvers as she tries to figure out her new powers.

At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Feige announced that the superhero film will be set in the ’90s, before the Avengers ever thought of assembling, and Samuel L. Jackson is expected to reprise his role as Nick Fury.

The pic is expected to bow on March 8, 2019.

This would mark the second major tentpole part Law has landed this year after getting the role of young Albus Dumbledore in “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.” He is also still attached to star in a third “Sherlock Holmes” film, which Warner Bros. is currently developing.

Law just wrapped shooting Woody Allen’s next movie, starring Elle Fanning, and is about to start shooting the spy thriller “The Rhythm Section” opposite Blake Lively. He is repped by WME, Julian Belfrage Associates, and attorney Karl Austen.

Jude Law is in negotiations to co-star with Blake Lively in the spy thriller “The Rhythm Section” from director Reed Morano, and “James Bond” producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli.

IM Global will finance the film, while Paramount will handle worldwide distribution. Wilson and Broccoli are producing through their Eon Productions banner, with IM Global co-founder Stuart Ford exec producing along with Greg Shapiro and Mark Burnell.

The movie is a contemporary adaptation of the first of Burnell’s “Stephanie Patrick” British series of four novels. Lively will play the titular heroine, who’s on a path to self-destruction after the death of her family in an airplane crash — a flight that she was meant to be on. After discovering that the crash wasn’t an accident, her anger awakens a new sense of purpose as she becomes an assassin to track down those responsible. Other novels in Burnell’s popular series include “Gemini,” “The Third Woman,” and “Chameleon.”

The film will begin production this fall and will likely shoot in the U.S., the U.K., Ireland, Spain, and Switzerland.

Law recently wrapped filming on the sequel to “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” where he plays a younger version of wizard Albus Dumbledore, a role made famous by Richard Harris and Michael Gambon in the “Harry Potter” movies. He is also still attached to star in a third “Sherlock Holmes” film, which Warner Bros. is currently developing.

Law is about to start shooting Woody Allen’s next pic, starring Elle Fanning. He is repped by WME, Julian Belfrage Associates, and attorney Karl Austen.

It was recently revealed that HBO/Sky and director Paolo Sorrentino will be offering up a follow-up to “The Young Pope” called “The New Pope,” which will move on from Jude Law’s character of Lenny Belardo, a conservative American pontiff. But the actor’s charismatic turn still puts him in the mix for possible Emmy recognition in the limited series category this year. Law recently spoke to Variety about building his character, luxuriating in Pope-wear and how the current political climate could fuel a second season.
